CREATE DEPTH IN YOUR LANDSCAPE PAINTING”

B 17

The artist has transposed the flat canvas into a third dimension giving the feeling you can walk right into the picture. Creating a believable landscape painting with depth is technique. Some of the following techniques skilled artist have orchestrated are laying and overlapping, using diagonals, aerial perspective, foreground interest, and changes in size.

Layering and overlapping is effective when there is a notable contrast in the shade or texture of two overlapping objects.

Aerial perspective a faraway mountain range will usually appear lighter, hazier and bluer as it gets further away. The changes in temperature in color such as, warm colors are more attention grabbers they seem to advance more than cool colors which seem to recede.

When working a subject at medium to far distance, it can appear flat. By including an object of interest in the foreground will enhance the sense of depth, which will lead the viewer into the scene, from the foreground to the subject in the distance.
