A Lesson In Contour Drawing

blogfigureblindcontour

An excellent drawing teacher, I had at Syracuse named Herb Tauss gave us a lesson in blind contour drawing. The model would take a pose and if you were sitting in front of them you would have to figure out how the back looked. This is an excellent lesson in focusing and training the eye to understand how you observe the figure even though you are looking at a different view. At first this lesson might not turn out exactly the way you want but in time with practice, you will find that you will be able to understand the human body more accurately when you are drawing what is in front of you. Your eye will slowly begin to follow the contour edge of the figure. As you draw this outer line shapes fall into place. When drawing you are looking at shapes.
