How Art differs from Design?

Venice Bridges17

Art and design differs in terms of their purpose: what are they intended for? Design tends to be for a commercial purpose. In other words a designer has a client that they are doing a job for were as the artist is doing a work for themselves.
Designs are simply successful if they are able to achieve their purpose. The bottom line is the client must be satisfied.
The artist differs in the wisdom that it pursues interpretation from the viewer rather than clarification. Countless viewers will make numerous interpretations on one specific painting. All these interpretations are correct.
Design is not meant to be interpreted but to be understood. The designer is relaying a message.
